6 Benches

The Baby Whale Belly Benches are made from White Oak beams that were originally used as pedestals for the sculptures of the artist Dustin Yellin at the Samuel Freeman gallery. These upcycled benches  were custom designed for Samuel Freeman with a carving inspired by his family farm's freshly plowed spring fields that happened to look like whale bellies.

Scissor Chair

Reclaimed Douglas Fir, Scrap Leather

20" x 18" x 35"

I love folding chairs. I just hate that they fold.

But the shape is perfect. I stole the geometry from an old folding chair and put in some solid joinery to create this dining chair. Pretty simple really.

French stitch on the cushion made from leather cut offs. A rich red velvet fabric is used on the underside of the cushion.

Spring Back Bankers Chair

Spring Back Bankers Chair

Spring Back Bankers Chair

2008

Laminate Bent Ash, Aluminum Steel

I name this chair after the stock market crash in 2008 hoping for a speedy recovery.

I found two discarded Ikea chairs on the street and two old fashioned banking chairs in a dumpster I was scavenging beams from next to a bike shop in LA.

They all sat in the back of my shop for almost a year taking up space and not helping out with rent so I took them apart to throw away and this happened. The two carved bankers seats became the back and seat. The springs from the bankers chairs adjustments softened up the stiff wood seat making it very comfortable.

I had the plastic Ikea wedges sand cast in aluminum recycled from aluminum cans.

I never took this seriously but a photographer insisted on photographing it. She made me submit it to a blog called Ikea Hack where people DJ Ikea products into new products.

I didn't know there was a vote but apparently I got #2. Then it was picked up in blogs and magazines. It is now in the collection of Paul Ruscha.

Grasshopper Lounge Chair

Grasshopper Lounge Chair

Grasshopper Lounge Chair

2012

Urban Salvaged Persimmon

42" x 28" x38"

In 2012 there was a huge storm that knocked down a large number of trees at the Los Angels Arboretum. Saddened by the loss of some very rare trees the Arboretum invited artist to make work with the fallen material that would be auctioned off to raise money to repair the damages from the storm. With the help of the lead botanist I chose this beautiful no fruiting Persimmon. It is in the same family as Ebony and it is just as hard and beautiful to work with. The wood tone blends from dark grey to gram cracker tan.

The Grasshopper Lounge Chair sold at auction to the lead Botanist at the arboretum and was featured in "Windfall Show," at the Los Angels Craft and Folk Art museum.

Bubble Belt Chair

Bubble Belt Chair

Bubble Belt Chair

2015

Reclaimed Douglas Fir

48" x 24" x 40"

The Bubble Belt Chair is the most wasteful chair in the world! Designed to as a commentary on mass producing furniture that is over packaged and shipped around the world this chair allows each person who sits on it to have a fresh seat of super fun pop-able bubble wrap. Just pul the bubble wrap on the seat and a fresh set of bubbles rolls off onto the back and seat. Perforated plastic lets you rip of your seat for home popping.

The Douglas Fir is Reclaimed from a conveyor belt in cannery row. The material's former life as a fixture in mass producing can goods provides another layer to the mass production theme. The black holes in the seat and back are recesses from the metal grommets the conveyor belt rollers sat in. I used original steel grommets to hold the new conveyor belt rollers in.

This piece was purchase by film maker Dick Thompson and use in his horror film "CLAW" which won best horror short Film Quest 2018.

Kick Ass Chair

Kick Ass Chair

Kick Ass Chair

2015

Reclaimed Douglas Fir, Rubber Leather

48" x 20" x 35"

The Kick Ass Chair is a motivational chair. Sit down pull the two ropes forward, then let go and get a swift kick in the ass.

Just so many metaphors here but I made it at a time when I thought people who purchased mass produced products needed a kick in the ass to wake them up to how stupid that concept was. Support local artist instead. It may be a little more expensive but it is better quality and design.

I let people use it at the opening and it was so funny! The first person's face went from huge smiles to a puckered ouch and I burst out laughing with the gallery owner. People were lining up all night to get their ass kicked. More great metaphors.

For some reason I had a hard time selling this piece. I don't know? Its awesome for sure but people have hang ups. When Anderson Ranch asked for a donation to their auction I offered it to them. They auctioned it for a nice price and the money was donated to the ranch. It is now in a private collection in Aspen.

Marshmallow Woodblock Print Bench

Marshmallow Woodblock Print Bench

The Marshmallow Woodblock Print Bench is made from windfall Persimmon wood that fell at the Los Angeles Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in the 2011 wind storm. It features a relief carving that depicts a field of of growing marshmallow boxes. Before being turned into a bench nine hand rubbed vacuum pressed embossed prints were created from the bench top. This piece is part of an instillation that was shown at the Anderson Ranch Art Center in Aspen Colorado and will be featured at the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum.

Dragon Table

Dragon Table

The Dragon Table

2010

14' x 3.5’ x 30"

Curved in all directions and gridded with soft bumps the Dragon Table got its name after I finished it and thought the bumps looked like scales. Even though it is extremely heavy it looks light with its curves.

The wood was found on Alameda Street in Downtown Los Angeles. The bottom is modeled in a 3d drawing program and milled with a CNC machine. The top and legs are finished with blades only. The bottom is buffed with steal wool instead of sand paper to preserve corduroy texture create by setting the mill to a larger step in the x direction.

These are actually two tables the can fit end to end to make a 14' dining table or side to ."side to make a 7' by 7' square.

It was featured in California Home in Design on the cover of the article title, "What's Hot and Happening in Los Angeles.” 2010 and was in The California Design Biennial 2010 at The Pasadena Museum of California Art.

Toad Table

Toad Table

The Toad Table

2009

7' x 3' x30"

The Toad is my first CNC carved Belly Table. It got its name because its stance and belly remind me of a toad. In lieu of an apron for stability I use extremely old wood that is too dry to move with seasonal moisture.

Made from Douglas Fir reclaimed from a house in Hollywood. The Top and Legs are finished with blades and the bottom is finished with steel wool to preserve the corduroy texture created by the CNC mill.

The legs fit into hand chiseled mortises and are held into place with wedges from the top. The joint is a double mortis with a step that I invented the in NYC to connect legs to a curved bottom.

The beauty of belly tables is the simplicity but it is not simple. The legs are canted toward the corners to create triangulation for stability. The mortises have to be perfect and tight because this is the literally the only structural mechanical connection to the top and yet these tables are so strong and tight that they ring like a drum when you hit them.

Red Barron Bar Table

Red Barron Bar Table

Resident Table

Reclaimed Douglas Fir, Powder coated aluminum

2015

32" x 18" x20"

I designed 14 outdoor tables for the Resident Bar Garden in DTLA. The clients vision was metal bases with wood tops. I flipped it so the water proof material was on top and the wood bases would be perfect for the concrete floors. The garden is beautiful but besides the flowers everything was wood or concrete. The Barron Red Powder coating adds a touch of color throughout the whole garden. The coolest part of these tables is the joinery. The legs are held in with curved half laps cut on the CNC. The idea being that as you pound the joints together with a rubber hammer the curved joints pulls the leg into the apron without clamps.

Bunk Bed Side Table

Bunk Bed Side Table

Bunk Bed Side Table

2009

Reclaimed Douglas Fir

18" x 22" x 78"

Designed as an end table for a bunk bed this table might be the tallest table in the world. It has 43 legs that are hollowed out on the bottom and weighted with hidden steal rods for stability. They also have adjustable rubber feet to level it to uneven floors. The top is made of strips with dados lengthwise for splines. The legs half lap into the splines locking them in place. The end grain of the splines is visible as a grid on the table surface.

The wood was reclaimed from a Hollywood house porch. I used all of the wood so it is like looking at a shrunken porch. There is also a spring loaded button on the front you can push in. It doesn't really do anything but I think it might give the table pleasure. Interesting note it never made to to the bunk bed. It was purchased as a sculpture for an entrance way.

Ping Pong Table

Ping Pong Table

Outdoor Ping Pong Table

2015

Reclaimed Souglas Fir, Powder Coated Aluminum

8' 9" x 5' x 30"

The most fun table I made by far! The 3/8" thick aluminum top is laser cut to regulation size then powder coated Barron red. The net is also laser cut aluminum powder coated silver. The Aluminum is a beautiful material to play on giving the ball the perfect bounce and a nice tone when tested for regulation play.

The top has threaded rods welded into the bottom that bolt into the beams to lock it in place. The feet sit on concrete footings with metal flanges mortised into the legs and pegged in place. Then the decomposed Granite is poured over the footings to create a surface similar to a clay tennis court.

The net is drilled and tapped and countersunk screws hold it in place through laser cut holes in the top. The solid net actually provides the structure the prevents the aluminum surface from sagging in the middle. It is a stripped down minimal design. The top is 900lbs. Worried by the strength I had a engineer approve the structure before I built it.

Polliwog Coffee Table

Polliwog Coffee Table

Pollywog Table

2013

Recycled Plexi Glass

4' x 4' x 14"

The Pollywog table is milled to look like pollywog eggs and the legs are the wiggly tales. I played in ponds as a kid and the best was spring when you could pick up the "boba in jello" like eggs in your hand and let them fall through your fingers. Not unlike dumping a whole jar of jelly in your hand. It didn't hurt the eggs they each had a clear bubble to protect them and you could see the little polliwogs swimming in there.

The bubble pattern was created in Grasshopper by assigning properties to each effect. It reminds me of guitar amp plug ins for different sounds. This was simple. Each click of the mouse create a bubble. If the bubbles were close together the were small if they were far apart they were big.

The mill took over 36 hours to run. There is no shading or paint just the slightly frosted marks from the mill. The top was polished and puffed to a crystal clear finish. The legs are press fit in with rubber washers and no glue so there is no yellowing over time.

69 Leg Table

69 Leg Table

69 Leg Table

2014

44”x 28” x 20”

The top is made from recycled 2 x 4s. The legs are maple from a work bench top. The legs go through the top and half lap into the spline locking them in place. The end grain in the leg is visible in the top and creates a square grid pattern in the top.

I wasn't paying attention to the number of legs I was putting in. I was using a jig to create a pattern that was gridded but also broke away from the grid. Order is soothing but breaking away is freeing.

A friend said if you add another leg I will buy it. The next one I designed for a gallery and it had less legs but they also wanted 69. I guess I stopped fighting it and gave into the name/design.
