The Dragon Table is a series of two 7 foot long tables that can be arranged end to end to make one 14' X 3 1/2' table or placed side by side to make  a 7' X 7' square table.  I reclaimed the wood from a renovated building in Downtown Los Angeles on Alameda street a few blocks from my loft.   The table top has a hand planed finish that gives the grain a depth and a clarity that cannot be achieve with sand paper.  It is then treated with 5 coats of Sutherland Welles Tung Oil.  The leg joints are hand chiseled and the legs are permanently locked into place with hardwood wedges visible in the top of the table.  The bottom of each table is not only slightly arched in all four directions but also carved with bubbles.  Extending in a grid along the curving surface the bubbles looked like the scales of dragon when I finally put the two finished tables together.  Hence the name. However, the bubbles were inspired by textures like bubble wrap, the rubber nubs on a stainless steal gas peddle and the yellow non slip grips by the edge of subway and train tracks, but not really mythical beasts. Why carve bubbles into the bottom of the table?  Because it is fun!  The half bubbles on the sides of the table are hints of what awaits underneath.  It is a process of interaction that might take a whole meal or glass of wine to discover but eventually wandering hands find the carvings and soon after that people are peeking underneath to get a better view.  For me that is the fun. I love the delayed tactile discovery and how the carving is temporarily veiled by the table’s utilitarian nature.  I like the subtleties of the common hiding the extraordinary.  See the making of this table.

The  69 Leg Table is the third version of my ever evolving many legged table line .  This table is designed with 69 Maple legs recycled from a workbench.   The top is made from old growth Douglas Fir reclaimed from a Craftsman house in Hollywood, California that was being renovated.  The 5/8" square legs pierce through the Douglas Fir surface creating a pixel pattern on top.  The top and legs are hand planed and finished with 5 coats of Sutherland Welles Tung Oil.  The legs feature no maring rubber bumpers that protect floors from scratches. My many legged tables were first inspired by the visual and emotional feeling of driving through a field of corn.  The legs are formed in a grid  that is eventually deviated from.  I like the idea of creating a rigid pattern system and capturing the energy of rebelling from that system in the work.  It is the metaphorical struggle between agriculture and nature.  However, the 69 leg table is subtle enough to inspire people to come up with their own ideas about the piece.  Some of my favorite interpretations are a forest of trees, a millipede, a brush, a lawn aerator, a bed of nails, and an eyelash bug.

I created Pac Man, aka Jennybugg, table with fellow Los Angeles designer Jenny Comperda.  This clever 12" diameter end table with missing pie piece fits perfectly on the end of your couch or love seat to create a petite surface to put a drinking glass, eyeglasses or even a book on.  It features a recycled Douglas Fir table top with eleven Maple legs.  The Maple was recycled from a cutting board and the Douglas Fir from a house in the Hollywood Hills.  It is finished with 5 coats of hand rubbed Tung Oil.  More Pictures

The Inky and Blinky end tables are made from a recycled Oak Bed, found on the street in Hollywood and a redwood 2" x 4" reclaimed from a house being renovated a little further up in the Hollywood Hills.  These matching end pieces are designed to sit next to the arm of your favorite couch or love seat.  They are perfect for a lamp or simply to rest a drink on. You can separate the tables or you can mix and match them with the Jennybugg table as seen in the photo above.  Each end table is hand planed and finished with hand rubbed tung oil.   When placed together with the Jennybugg table they remind me of two if the ghosts, Inky and Blinky, from the Pac Man video game.  The legs coming through table top form a pattern that looks like the giant pixels that made up the images on the classic arcade screens. This is the “Giant Squid” Bunk Bed Side Table.  It is 75 inches tall so it is nice to put a book, glass of water or your glasses on when you are sleeping on your top bunk.  Notice the spring loaded walnut fun button that you can push in and out.  It doesn’t really have any function.  The Giant Squid is made of 53 recycled Douglas Fir legs that are weighted on the bottom with hidden steel rods and features adjustable rubber feet so you can level it to any floor.  The legs plunge through the top of the table bisecting hidden splines with half lap joints so although it is wiggly it is strong.  The Douglas Fir top and legs are made from wood recycled from a house in Hollywood.  More Pictures

The Pollywog Table is a 1" thick sheet of Plexi glass carved on the bottom to look like over-sized frog eggs.   Inside each egg is the black pollywog that will soon hatch and eventually grow into a frog.  My pollywogs are made up of 99 armature wire legs that are malleable enough to bend and strong enough to make this table stable.  Armature wire is used in the stop animation industry to create puppets that are pose-able in many different positions.  I slid a black air hose over each piece of wire and capped the ends with rubber cane grips to mimic the heads of the pollywog.   More Pictures

The Belly Table is made from old growth Douglas Fir beams that I recycled from a store on Western Ave in Hollywood, California that was being renovated.  It features a hand planed top with my hand chiseled signature mortise and tendon joinery that locks the legs permanently into the table with hardwood wedges.  The bottom of the table is carved with a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) mill to create a unique blend of hand crafted woodworking with modern carving techniques.  The wide stance and the curved belly give it the nickname "The Toad."  See the making of this table. The Spring Back Banker's Chair is made up of 4 recycled Klackbo Ikea chair legs plus two antique bankers chair seats and springs. My friend gave me two Ikea chairs she had in her apartment in Hollywood. They were laminate bent leg living room chairs that had no arms. I removed the cushions and I kept the legs because the bent wood seemed too good to throw away. I also had these oak banker’s chairs with broken legs. Again I just couldn’t throw them away because they seemed too good.   Finally, I took them apart and reassembled all four chairs into one chair. It was too much fun!  It is kind of a hit because it is bouncy with the bend wood and the springs from the bankers chairs.  More Pictures
