Belly Table Made from Recycled Southern Yellow Heart Pine

Belly Table

This is a table I made in NYC for the photo rental studio “The Space.” It is made of the vertical supports that were removed from the studios when the studio was remodeled. The space is located in the Chelsea Market which was once the old National Biscuit Company factory. The building is surrounded by the abandoned elevated trains tracks that they are renovating into an elevated park. The legs feature a hand routed edge made by the workers who originally made the building. The edges reveal layers and layers of old paint that once coated the columns.

The top of this table feature butterfly joinery that holds the old cracked wood together. I made each butterfly patch a different size and shape to show that they were hand chiseled into the top.

The other inlay is the leg coming through the top of the table. The joint is in the shape of a V so that when the wedges (dark stripes is the inlay) are pounded in they spread out the leg and lock the legs in place. The table top is hand planed with five coats of tongue oil finish. The aged wood has beautiful grains displaying ribbons of color that varies from dark to light according to the summer and winter season changes. The dark wood is the harder dense winter wood and the lighter strip is the quicker growing summer rings. Photos by Julia Wollenhaupt
